Monday was Native American Day.
And hey, it's my birthday!! What better way to celebrate than with the grandbabies!!
And hey, it's my birthday!! What better way to celebrate than with the grandbabies!!
We started the day with homemade biscuits and gravy with sausage!!
Then I had a little power point about different Indians. Chandler knew all about Indians so he told us pretty much everything I had on the power point. The littles are really into it. ;)
Then I told the grands that we were going to do a little time travel to see if we could find any Native Americans or Native American items.
When Austin was a little boy he went through an Indian phase and he loved everything about them - costumes, rain stick, music, . . . I had saved his Indian outfits and I also had one that belonged to Robert and one that was Robert's dad's when he was a little boy. I placed pieces of the costumes around the yard and we followed the trail. As they found a piece they decided who would wear that piece. Harrison started out participating but then he didn't want to do it anymore. He just wanted to get the grass out of his shoes. LOL!! Kinsler wanted no part of the dress up. Chandler and Rainey completed the task and they were pretty cute American Indians.
Harrison is wearing Grandad's (Robert's) Indian outfit.
Chandler is wearing Uncle Austin's outfit and Rainey is wearing her
great-granddad's (Bob Taylor) outfit.
Around the next corner was the igloo.
We had talked about the Inuit Indians and how they lived in igloos.
Olsen wanted to participate and be in all the pictures!!!
I had decided to do a milk jug igloo and I wanted it to relate to something rather than just having an igloo with no purpose, therefore we talked about different Native American tribes and what they ate, where they lived and so forth. I thought it would take too long if I did it with the kids and I had to use hot glue which would not be very safe with the little who would want to help. It took me a few hours on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon to get it completed. It was not exactly as I had imagined. I wanted it more rounded at the top but I was working blind. I searched online for tips on how to put one together and I just went with it.
After the "time travel" we went back inside for some snacks and some crafts. Everything related to the theme of the day. They had things that the Native American might have eaten. I served sunflower seeds, grapes and goldfish (to represent the fish they caught and ate.)
We made Indian vests and headdresses out of paper bags and construction paper.
Then we made rains sticks using Pringles cans, rice and foil. I let them decorate with different colored duct tape.
We also made totem poles using Pringles cans.
After crafts we had lunch. We had turkey sandwiches with corn chips.
When the littles went down for naptime, Chandler and Rainey watched Pocahontas.
After naptime we had a snack of popcorn and beef jerky.
Next we did some swimming and played in the tent.
For dinner we had meatballs, fried squash, red beans and cornbread. I'm sure the Native Americans had something like that. :) After dinner the kids put together bead bracelets and necklaces and we talked about how the Native Americans might have made color dyes.
Our bedtime story was The Polar Bear Son - an Inuit Tale by Lydia Dabcovich.
Day 1 complete. Night night! Tomorrow will come early!!!
