Alaskan cruise - day 4 (Monday, June 7)

Sun rose early!!! I had breakfast sent to the room so I could take my time getting ready. Robert went to the buffet. He came back shortly and said they had spotted some whales. We went out onto our balcony and watched for a little while. They were pretty far away so this is the best I could get.

Scenery coming into Juneau!! The pictures don't do the beauty of the area justice. Juneau is the only state capital that you cannot get to by automobile. You have to go by boat or plane.

In Juneau we took a flight and feast excursion to the Taku Glacier Lodge.

We flew on a float plane for about 40 minutes over the glacier and mountains which was amazing.

The glacier absorbs all color except blue so there were some beautiful blue spots in the glacier. We then landed - in the water - at the Taku Lodge.

They already had the salmon grilling and there was a mama bear and cub in a tree about 15 yards away. They had sniffed out the salmon.

Once we went inside to eat, mama and the cub got out of the tree and went to clean up the grill. :) They coat the salmon with butter, etc. before they put it on the grill. The butter drips into the sand below and the bears lick the sand to get the butter drippings.

Lunch was so yummy! We had grilled salmon, baked beans, cole slaw, herb biscuits and gingersnap cookies. All homemade and so good!! We had drinks cooled with glacier ice.

After lunch we walked a little trail beside the lodge but fought the mosquitoes all the way. We then milled around visiting and taking pics while waiting on the plane to pick us up. While waiting a male bear came up in the backyard because they started getting the salmon ready for the next group that would be flying in.

On the way back I even got brave enough to sit in front with the pilot!!

The weather was gorgeous and we didn't need those jackets that we had taken off the ship that morning. We had time to do some shopping after we returned from the salmon bake. We hit several shops and made some fun purchases.

We still had some time so we dropped off our goods in our room and headed back out to the Red Dog Saloon. There was a man singing and playing his guitar. He gave us a hard time about being from Texas - all in good fun though. We listened to him sing for a little while and then headed back to the ship for dinner. Afterwards we went back to our room and sat on the balcony to watch the departure from Juneau. It was so nice and cool!! Got to talk to all of the kids except Kylie. When I called Britni, Chandler answered the phone and I asked him what he was doing. He said nothing and I said it is summer vacation - you need to be doing something. He said, "It's nighttime." It was about 6:30 p.m. in Juneau so it was their bedtime (9:30 p.m.) in Texas. I kept forgetting about the time difference. This picture was taken at 11 p.m. Alaska time.

There were 4 cruise ships in Juneau at the same time. Ours is the Rotterdam on the left. The Celebrity Cruise ship is on the right.

Here is the Celebrity, the ginormous Golden Princess and then another Holland America ship on the far right.

And this little creature was waiting for us when we got back to our room for the evening.
